Those words were spoken by Steve Jobs when he unveiled the iPhone in 2007.
He was partially right.
While it was the iPhone that jumpstarted the smartphone industry, it was the introduction of the first third-party apps a year later that really unlocked the potential of this new class of device.
When we set out to pick the 100 best iPhone apps of all time, our intention wasn't to simply do a list of the most useful or entertaining apps currently available.
Just as a great teacher in your youth may have helped shape who you are today, groundbreaking apps of the past have had tremendous impact on the iPhone experience, even if their influence may have since waned or faded entirely.
Ranking them was even more of a challenge.
After whittling the list down to 100, we rated each app on its design, usefulness and cultural impact.
We also took into account App Store data provided by analytics firm App Annie.
Though many names on this list are familiar, there are some surprises, too.
SMS does a decent job of two-factor authentication for typical web users β€” where, in addition to a password, you receive a secret code via text message that lets you securely log into a service.
But levels-up the idea in a few key ways: it doesn't require connectivity, so you can use it on a plane, and it provides the airtight security you get with one of those easy-to-misplace key fobs, making it suitable for corporate use.

It was helped along by challenging yet easy-to-play levels that could be attempted β€” and re-attempted β€” in a minute.

Staffed by humans editors based around the globe, this Twitter-powered aggregator delivers short, hand-curated updates on the world's biggest stories.
The notifications that make this one a killer app: Tell it which stories you want to follow most closely and you'll never miss a beat.
It cleverly let you show off the device's multi-touch display and accelerometer still novelties at the time : Tap to make a splash, shake to feed the fish… and that's it.
No scores, no menus and no point.
Which really was the point.
It single-handedly helped hordes of Star Wars fans live out their Jedi vs.
For many, built-in apps like Tips, Stocks and Compass are one of the bigger annoyances of iOS.
Butwhich made a brief appearance in the App Store in 2013, allowed you to hide those stock apps.
While the process of actually hiding apps was a bit wonky and the app was short-lived Apple pulled itthe app offered a useful look into the type of customization that usually requires a full-on jailbreak.
For each route you search, the app provides an up-to-the-minute breakdown of the fastest possible route, taking all available transit options into account, even things like local bike shares and shuttles.
It maps out the routes you take, keeps tabs on distance traveled, pace and calories burned, and tracks other activities as well.
The app has cultivated a large and engaged community too that lets users share stats to motivate or guilt friends off the couch.
The app quickly racked up more than a million users and inspired dozens of copycats Yo Hodor, anyone?
Today, you can use Yo to turn on your lights, remember where you parked your car, or follow your favorite sports teams, publishers and Instagrammers.
It was possible to filter by price, neighborhood, ratings and cuisine, and like a slot machine, the app randomly selected nearby eateries that matched those preferences.
It has virtual woodgrain, and what looks like a classic glass, liquid and bubble level on the screen.

The interface is easy to use and smartly integrated with existing social platforms to help organizers get the word out.
Later, when Google killed Reader in 2013, the service became more essential, adding more than half a million new users in the span of 48 hours as panicked Reader devotees flocked to the app.

The app, which actually arrived just weeks before, kicked off the live, social video streaming craze β€” quite a feat since the app was kind of ugly and had an odd name.
Even with those handicaps, it became the app of SXSW, with everyone from journalists to CEOs were using it to broadcast their experiences and engage with their audience in real time.
Meerkat took citizen journalism to a whole new level as "reporters" were able to respond to viewer comments, some of whom would direct where they wanted the Meerkatters to point their iPhones.
No one saw Meerkat coming, especially Twitter.
Meerkat was using Twitter's API to give users instant access to all their followers through the app Twitter eventually shut down that feature.
If you had a lot of Twitter followers, that made Meerkat instantly powerful.
You could tell thousands of people that you were going live right now.
It was instant gratification, on both sides.
No rise was more meteoric and none was shorter-lived.
Twitter already had a similar app in the works, and just a few weeks later, it pushed out Periscope.
100 doors game to play online app looked better than Meerkat, but also felt somewhat incomplete.

In the meantime, the world discovered you really could be funny in six seconds and soon Vine was filled with comedy.
It helped launch the careers of more than a few entertainers and created its own subgenre: the Vine star.
If you still think is just about messaging, you're vastly underestimating the platform, which now counts more than 650 million users.
Weixin, as it's known in China, is the most dominant social network in the People's Republic, where Facebook, Instagram and many other apps are blocked.
WeChat is where you go to pay bills, hail rides, play casual games, browse news, send friends money, and much more.
Looking at what WeChat is to China, you can't help but think this is what Facebook wants to be to the world.
An essential first line of defense for the click to see more and unlucky, has helped recover countless devices β€” whether dropped, stolen or in your pocket the whole time.
The app not only shows you a detailed map with the device's last location clearly marked, but lets you trigger an alarm for extra help in finding it as well as remotely wipe the device if those tools fail.
Angry Birds It seems a red, round bird with thick, scowling eyebrows is destined to be just as recognizable as Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.
Every platform needs that first game to push it to new heights, and for iOS, that game was Angry Birds.
The simple idea of slingshotting disgruntled avians towards teetering towers of bricks, stones and pigs was the perfect fit for touch controls.
It was helped along by challenging yet easy-to-play levels that could be attempted β€” and re-attempted β€” in a minute.
It changed the way mobile developers thought about games for years, with both a premium version and a free, ad-supported version available.
Angry Birds eventually came in so many sequels and flavors β€” including tie-ins with Star Wars and Transformers β€” and spawned toys, cartoons and an upcoming animated film.
While mobile game fads may change, it has stood the test of time.
The app's utility and importance is undeniable.
With its own dedicated app the company used to rely on third-party apps the service experienced almost meteoric growth… for a while.
There's no question that little aqua bird and the iPhone have helped each other fly high.
Facebook was also one of the first apps to link directly with iOS β€” a huge upgrade that let other apps easily log in via Facebook ID, and it turbocharged photo sharing.
The app used to be notoriously slow due to a brief and disastrous flirtation with HTML5but today Facebook provides one of the best mobile experiences ever, and new features like Instant Articles and 360-degree video promise to take things even further.
No other utility app has had an impact on everyday life quite like.
The app quickly developed a reputation for providing reliable directions, and it freed users from the chains of printed maps and GPS systems.
Apple replaced Google Maps with its own service in 2012, but the effort backfired: Apple Maps was widely criticized, and three months later Google Maps reappeared in the App Store and has been one of its most-downloaded ever since.
When half your Twitter timeline was filled with Instagram shots, the FOMO was real.
The app was simple, and its filtered creations easily shareable, which helped Instagram go viral almost immediately.
Like many apps, Instagram owes some of its original virality to Twitter, which helped the app take off seemingly overnight.
Even as Instagram grew, it never got too cluttered with unnecessary features and updates.
Though some initially questioned the move, Instagram, which now counts more than 400 million users, has only grown its popularity and influence.
Its design isn't perfect, to be sure there's no way to zoom, for instancebut the app changed how we think about sharing experiences, and it's become one of the most influential social networks in the world.
